Baroque Apotheosis / Noto, Sicily

Sicily is home to magnificence, but Noto is extraordinary. After the earthquake in 1693, the city was rebuilt and, thanks to the great architecture work, returned to life as an apotheosis of baroque ideals.

The town’s historical buildings are covered with a fine-grained, yellowish limestone that beautifully absorbs the sun’s rays and transforms them into a soft golden-honeyed glow. The effect during the sunset (but not only) is quite something!

I visited Noto with the aim of seeing Igor Mitoraj’s fragmented sculptures, whose work I personally admire, but I left completely enchanted by the city.
